Double Trouble

As the leaves turn from green to red, yellow, and orange, we transition from September weather into the crisp October breeze. The turtlenecks will re-enter our wardrobe while we say goodbye to our beloved summer dresses and tank tops. Since we live in Michigan, you never know exactly how long summer will last, though! Ah, and I almost forgot to mention how much we are already enjoying the apple orchards, and drinking the tastiest apple cider around. Our visits to the pumpkin patch will soon begin, and with Halloween inching closer by the day, we would like to wish you a BOO-tiful holiday full of pumpkin carving, crazy costumes, and lots of candy. Don’t forget to accessorize all month long with TWO October birthstones; opal and pink tourmaline.

Opal: Opals come in two categories; precious and common. In a nutshell, the difference between common opal and precious opal is that the latter displays colorful reflections of light known as ‘play of color’ when a discrete light source shines on it, while common opal does not show any color effect at all, no matter what kind of light shines on it. The beautiful simple colors of the opal are a great way to compliment any outfit. This precious stone symbolizes purity and hope, and is known as the protector stone.

Pink Tourmaline: As you probably could have guessed, pink tourmaline comes in a few different shades of pink, although tourmaline itself comes in a variety of colors. This stone can help bring joy, happiness, and loving energy. It is also used as a talisman by artists and writers because it is thought to inspire creativity. Wearing pink tourmaline is said to help release stress, worries, depression, and anxiety. It is also believed to strengthen the body and spirit, increasing positive vibes.

Fun Facts:

OPAL

  • Opals are one of only a couple of gemstones in the world which have been found to exist outside of planet Earth; Mars to be exact!
  • Opal is the specific birthstone for October, it is also the gemstone given to commemorate a couple’s 14th year of marriage.
  • The term “opal” is believed to have originated from the Sanskrit word “upala”, which means “precious stone”. The Greeks called it “opallios” that translates “to percieve a change of color”.
  • The ancient Greeks believed that opals were formed from the tears of joy wept by Zeus when he defeated the titans, and that the opal bestowed prophetic powers.

PINK TOURMALINE

  • Tourmaline comes in many shades and colors; iron-rich (black/brown/blue), magnesium rich (light brown/yellow), lithium-rich (blue/green/red/pink), and even colorless.
    • Ancient legend states that tourmaline is the stone of many colors because of its travels along rainbows, where it captured the rainbows’ many beautiful colors.
  • The Egyptians used tourmaline for both physical and emotional remedies, believing it could help in the healing of the nervous system, blood diseases, and lymph glands.
  • Pink tourmaline has the power to open and heal the heart, to help with all romantic love matters.
